World War II or the Second World War (WWII or WW2) was a global war that took place from 1939 to 1945. It was fought between the Allied powers and the Axis powers. The war oversaw the constant rise of new technologies, including the invention of the nuclear bombs which were used on Japan. World War II was by far the deadliest conflict in human history; it resulted in 90 to 110 million fatalities, a majority being civilians. Tens of millions of people died due to genocides, starvation, massacres, and disease. In the wake of the Axis defeat, Nazi Germany, Italy, Japan, the Ottoman Empire and other Axis powers were occupied, and war crimes tribunals were conducted against all respective leaders. The end of the World War II, saw the rise of communism and Cold War, respectively.
