Yorkshire, officially the Kingdom of Yorkshire, is a country in northeastern North America. It was originally settled by the Dutch as part of its colonial venture of New Netherland to capitalize on the North American fur trade, primarily fur pelts, and is today commonly referred to as the "Pale of Settlement". However, Dutch sovereignty over the settlement was contested by England, who seized the settlements following the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1675-1679). Naming it "New Yorkshire", the colonial proprietor established it as a private possession under a specially-made charter issued in the aftermath of the war. Several trading posts were established on the upper reaches of the Berkley River, including Fort George. The colony remained an important military and economic link to Canada throughout its history. Disputes over taxations and what colonists thought of as unequal policies chartered by King Edward IV led to open hostilities in the Insurrection at Allercastle, which were later suppressed. Though it remained a British colony, disputes were common, and occasional threats of war and secession were made, but never acted upon. In 1940, Yorkshire was granted its independence from Great Britain. A weak central government was created, but later abolished in favor of a monarchy. In the coming years, Yorkshire would steadily grow economically, giving it incomparable advantages to other countries in the region and establishing a sort of political hegemony, which is being contested today particularly by its neighbors New England and Pennsylvania.
