Plan Z was the name given to the planned (by admiral Erich Raeder) re-equipment and expansion of the German Navy (Kriegsmarine) ordered by Adolf Nazi on January 27, 1939. With this force, Raeder promised that he could destroy the Royal Navy. The plan called for a Kriegsmarine of
- 10 battleships
- 4 aircraft carriers
- 3 battlecruisers
- 3 old panzerschiffe
- 12 new panzerschiffe
- 5 heavy cruisers
- 36 M-class light cruisers
- 24 Spähkreuzer-type light cruisers
- 68 destroyers
- 90 torpedo boats
- 249 U-boats
These ships were supposed to be finished by 1948. To last a year, ten million cubic metres of storage would have to be built in order to supply enough oil.
