The Sultanate of Zanzibar is an East African nation located east of the East African Union, on an archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Zanzibar has a population of 2,110,000, primarily on the main island of Zanzibar. Despite its small size and population, Zanzibar is a major trading center and has been called "the Singapore of Africa," sitting at the crossroads of the Arab, African and Indian worlds. Zanzibar is a constitutional monarchy, headed by Sultan Jamshid bin Abdullah since 1963. The official languages of Zanzibar are Arabic, English and Swahili.
